Lactation and Infant Feeding
At Pediatric Therapies we know that breast and bottle feeding can be challenging for moms and their partners. Infant feeding is complex. Simple solutions, such as changing bottle types or increasing calories for enhanced milk production do not always work. Our infant feeding program offers individualized care for newborns, infants, and their mothers. We have occupational and speech therapists who are certified in lactation consulting, feeding and oral motor skills, tummy time method, and Total Motion Release (TMR) tots. Using these specialized trainings and certifications, our therapists fully assess both the mother and infant to determine why breast or bottle feeding may be a challenge.
Some of the common concerns addressed are:
- Ensuring optimal feeding with both breastfeeding and bottle feeding
- Milk supply
- Poor weight gain
- Pain or discomfort with breastfeeding
- History of engorgement, clogged ducts, or mastitis
- Frequent spitting up or reflux-like symptoms
- Assess for lip, tongue, and/or cheek tie
- Difficulty with latch
- Tightness/restriction in infant’s neck or body
- Frequent gassiness, fussiness, or colic
- Constipation
Following an in-depth evaluation, our feeding team will create a personalized feeding plan for mother and her infant. Our goal is to help foster a positive feeding experience and healthy feeding habits for both mother and baby.
We also offer feeding therapy services beyond the breast and bottle. If your child struggles with transitioning to solids due to oral motor or sensory delays, our speech and occupational therapists can help!
