Helping your child pronounce the “r” sound

Child talking

Difficulty with pronouncing words can have an impact on the communication of a child with his or her peers. This can affect self-esteem and social interactions. In speaking, children often have difficulty pronouncing the “r” sound in words such as rabbit. Say the word rabbit and you will notice what your lips, tongue and pharynx (back of your throat) have to do.

When you say the “r” sound your lips have to make an O, your tongue makes a hump in the middle and your pharynx constricts slightly. When the tongue has to make a hump in the middle, this is often the hardest part for a child to perfect.
